10 Teams of hackers will be shortlisted to be the Finalists for presentation of their prototypes in
front of the Final Judging Panel on 29 April 2023 at HKUST
Each participating team can only submit one solution that addresses one of the five themes listed below:
Universal Anonymous Membership
Online Game Assets Custody and Trading Platform
Trend Tracking Transparency
Application of Web3 in Property Management
Social Entrepreneurship & Innovation
Eligibility of Joining hackUST 2023, powered by OKX

- Graduates/alumni who have graduated in 5 years
*Once enrolment is confirmed, applicants will have access to the Matching Platform, which allows individual applicants to form teams or join existing teams after confirmation of enrollment. Likewise, existing teams may search for additional members from this Platform as well.
Universal Anonymous Membership
Would you like to join our membership? There are lots of benefits. Does it sound familiar? It happens a lot when shop. In this situation, you may take the trouble to download the merchant's App and then fill in some personal details in order to join another membership when you already have many such kinds of memberships already. In this Web 3 new world, this does not sound ideal at all.
Can you come up with a solution to provide a universal anonymous membership using Web 3 technology that allowing customers to join different memberships anonymously and seamlessly while the merchants do not need to get any personal data but are still able to promote their products to targeted customers efficiently?

Online Game Assets Custody and Trading Platform
Trading digital assets such as in-game items - skins, avatars, virtual weapons, cards, MMORPG currencies - for real money outside the game is a multi-billion-dollar business. Currently, most non-blockchain games don't have a reliable marketplace for trading digital assets. Traders can trade on Discord or some in-game item trading sites - but fraud is expected as there is no guarantee that items will be delivered or real money will be received as agreed and in atomic time. Matching buyers and sellers is also difficult.
Can you use web3 technology to build a trusted storage and trading platform? With NFT, blockchain, it's no longer impossible. The platform can benefit both non-blockchain and blockchain games, with a standardised API for game developers, marketplace owners, social networks, etc.

Trend Tracking Transparency
When you look at the vastly different trending topics/songs in real life, have you ever wondered if the trend is real or controlled by whoever, rather than coming from real end users? Now imagine you were helping a company or platform like Twitter/Weibo/Spotify to build a solution and make their trending charts of topics/songs more trustworthy and transparent, how would you design and use Web3 related technology to achieve this goal?
Application of Web3 in Property Management
The potential impact of Web3 and decentralisation on various industries is significant, and the real estate sector is no exception. With asset tokenisation, smart contracts and decentralised finance, these technologies have the potential to revolutionise the process of buying, selling and investing in real estate. The real estate industry is vulnerable to disruption from Web3 and decentralisation, which could have long-term implications for innovators and investors alike.
For example, in shopping centres, web3 technology can create a more seamless and personalised shopping experience for customers. Some possible applications such as decentralised loyalty programs, decentralised supply chain management, product authentication, personalised promotions, decentralised payment systems etc.,
You are required to come up with a solution and application that can help shopping malls and centers management companies in increasing values for the malls and centers while enhancing immediate customer experience with long term loyalty.

Social Entrepreneurship & Innovation
House prices in many places, including Hong Kong SAR, are rising daily for a variety of reasons, including demand, speculation and extravagant spending. If this trend continues, Hong Kong's housing market may reach its limits and the whole industry may collapse in due course.
The majority of homeowners are staying put due to rising mortgage rates, creating a housing shortage. However, both homeowners and renters feel that it is becoming too difficult to find affordable accommodation.
Clearly, a solution to Hong Kong's housing problem is needed, and Web3 may be the unlikely (or likely?) source. The rise of Web3's business models, which revolve around non-fungible tokens (NFTs), blockchain technology and cryptocurrency, could be the right remedy for a situation that is currently plaguing Hong Kong's trillion-dollar property market.
Your team is to develop an innovative solution to solve the housing problem in Hong Kong SAR with an aim to reduce the need for sub-divided flats while increase affordability of renting or buying reasonable sized apartments based on Web3 technology.

Web3
Hackathon is an effective way to boost team-building, idea-sharing, concept-proving, prototyping and so on.
Hacking is no longer the privilege of programmers; anyone can hack any challenge with the skills they have. Those with a financial background can help programmers better solve FinTech problems. Someone with an interest and knowledge of social sciences can also enrich the hacking solution built with a biology student. Markers, HR and finance students are all great examples.
Web3, also known as the 'decentralised web', refers to a new generation of internet technologies built on decentralised, blockchain-based systems. These technologies have the potential to transform many aspects of our digital lives by enabling more secure, transparent and user-controlled interactions.
Some potential applications of web3 technologies include:
1. Decentralised Finance (DeFi): Web3 technologies can be used to create new financial products and services that are more transparent, accessible and secure. For example, DeFi platforms allow users to lend, borrow and trade cryptocurrencies without the need for intermediaries such as banks.
2. Decentralised identity: Web3 technologies can be used to create a more secure and user-controlled system of digital identity, where individuals can manage their own personal data and control who has access to it.
3. Asset ownership and management: Web3 technologies can be used to create a more secure and transparent system of asset ownership and management, reducing the risk of fraud and disputes.
4. Social media and content creation: Web3 technologies can be used to create new platforms for social media and content creation that are more decentralised, user-controlled and resistant to censorship.
5. Supply Chain Management: Web3 technologies can be used to create a more transparent and efficient supply chain system, where every step in the process is recorded on a secure, decentralised ledger.
Overall, web3 has the potential to transform many different industries and aspects of our digital lives, providing new opportunities for innovation and user empowerment.
